Marcus Gavius Apicius

Marcus Gavius Apicius lived during the reign of Tiberius in the 1st century A.D. Seneca the Younger tells us tells us that one day when Apicius counted his fortune he found he had only ten million sesterces left; this incidentally would still make him a multi-millionaire by today’s standards! He considered that such a paltry sum would condemn him to a life of starvation, and so he poisoned himself! Seneca also tells us that Apicius wrote two cookery books, a general recipe book, and a specialist work on sauces. Isidorus, a late writer, tells us that Apicius was  the first author in the ancient world to write a cookery book.
